Abstractions of Hong Kong
Despite Hong Kong’s fabled obsession with progress and modernity, there is a growing appreciation for its shared heritage, and for the historical value of its urban landscape. Hidden amongst the gleaming skyscrapers and modernist architecture, a parallel world exists of decaying village houses and rusting infrastructure. A new generation of residents has embraced this “ruin lust” and is searching ever deeper to find a common heritage of abandoned villages and neglected mansion houses. A close-up look at this alternative interpretation of life in the city, reveals a wonderful array of surfaces and textures, weathered by the intense humidity, typhoons and encroaching flora, with each offering its own kind of abstract and layered aesthetic.
